There are brands with a backstory, and then there is Captain Fawcett — a brand whose entire identity is built around one of the most gloriously committed pieces of storytelling in men's grooming. Part Edwardian adventure novel, part genuine British craftsmanship, entirely its own thing. Once you encounter it, you don't forget it.

The Legend of Captain Peabody Fawcett

The story goes like this. In 1905, the intrepid explorer Captain Peabody Fawcett R.N. (Ret'd) vanished without trace whilst attempting to navigate to the source of the Ubangi, a tributary of the Congo River. No expedition was ever found. Until, that is, a battered trunk surfaced at a house clearance in England. Inside: an exquisite dressing case containing salves, unguents, ointments, and the Captain's long-lost journals — scattered amongst tales of hardship and derring-do were meticulously detailed lists of exotic ingredients for the Captain's very own grooming requisites. These precise formulae, inspired the spirit and storytelling behind the range available today.

It should be noted, as the brand itself cheerfully acknowledges, that Captain Peabody Fawcett and his adventures are entirely a work of wild and fanciful imagination. The real story behind the brand is arguably just as good.

The Real Story: A Baked Bean Can and a Film Set

Captain Fawcett was founded by Richie Finney, a Norfolk-based entrepreneur who spent two decades working in the British film industry before turning his hand to grooming. The brand began, quite literally, with a baked bean can. Finney had been blending his own moustache wax at home for personal use — experimenting with formulations, mixing ingredients, storing the results in whatever containers came to hand.

His wife, Christine Greenwood — a highly respected film and television hair and make-up artist — took a jar of the wax onto a film set. The reaction from the make-up artists who tried it was immediate. They loved it. Finney began producing small batches. What followed was not what he expected.

That moustache wax became the foundation of a brand now exporting to over 40 countries, stocked by top-tier barbers worldwide, and recognised with multiple grooming industry awards. In the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours, Richie Finney was awarded an MBE for services to international trade and charity.

Made in Britain, Distributed to the World

Captain Fawcett operates from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, with a strong commitment to British manufacturing. In a market where "British heritage" is often a styling choice rather than a manufacturing reality, Captain Fawcett's commitment to domestic production is genuine and deliberate.

The brand's reach has extended to over 40 countries — from Iceland to New Zealand, from European barbershops to the US market, from India, where the Maharajah Signature Series was developed in homage to the intertwined cultural heritage of Britain and India.

The Range: Beard, Shave, Hair, Fragrance

Beard Oil

The beard oils are where Captain Fawcett first made its name beyond the moustache wax. Each oil is a considered blend of carrier and essential oils that conditions the beard, nourishes the skin beneath, and carries a scent complex enough to stand on its own. The range spans from the classic Eau de Cologne through to the distinctive Ricki Hall's Booze & Baccy, created in collaboration with one of the UK's most celebrated tattoo artists.

Beard Balm and Moustache Wax

The beard balms provide light hold and conditioning in a single product — ideal for shaping and taming without stiffness. The moustache wax, the product that started everything, remains the gold standard: firm hold, clean finish, long-lasting, and available in multiple scents. If you have a moustache of any ambition, this is where you start.

Shaving

The shaving range brings the same ingredient quality to the wet shave — shaving creams, soaps, pre-shave oils, and aftershave balms. A complete wet-shave system built for the man who considers his shave a ritual rather than a task.

Hair

The hair range extends the brand's reach into styling. The Expedition Reserve Matte Styling Powder, a Cosmoprof Awards finalist, delivers texture and volume with zero shine — one of the more sophisticated hair products in the range.

Fragrance

The Captain Fawcett fragrances work naturally alongside the beard oils and grooming products, creating a coherent scent signature across the entire grooming routine — complex, distinctive, unmistakably of their heritage.

The Character of the Brand

What makes Captain Fawcett genuinely special is that the character isn't a veneer — it runs through everything the brand does. The writing is consistently witty and warm. The founder has personally travelled extensively by motorcycle across Europe to visit barbershops and share the brand in person.

This is a brand made by someone who actually cares about what he's made — and whose enjoyment of the whole enterprise is visible in every jar, every label, and every dispatched communiqué from the Captain's journal.
