Alum Block — The Traditional Post-Shave Antiseptic

An alum block is one of the oldest and most effective post-shave tools available — a mineral crystal used for centuries as a natural antiseptic, astringent, and haemostatic (blood-stopping) agent. Wet and drawn across the face immediately after shaving, the alum contracts the skin, closes pores, stops minor nicks and weepers instantly, and provides a gentle antiseptic action without the harshness of alcohol-based products. It also acts as immediate feedback on your shave technique: the sting is most intense wherever the blade has irritated the skin, telling you precisely where to refine your angle or pressure next time.

Potassium alum — the naturally-occurring mineral form used in shaving blocks — is different from the aluminium-based compounds in antiperspirants and is widely considered safe for regular topical use. An alum block lasts many months of daily use, making it one of the most economical items in any wet shave kit. Rinse with cold water after a brief application, pat dry, and follow with your usual aftershave or moisturiser. Free delivery across Australia on orders over $50.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you use an alum block?
After completing your shave, wet the alum block under cold water and glide it gently across the freshly-shaved skin. Apply to the full shaved area, paying particular attention to any areas that felt rough or showed redness. Leave on the skin for 20–30 seconds — you will feel a mild tightening or stinging sensation, most pronounced where irritation occurred. Rinse the face with cold water, pat dry, then continue with your aftershave or moisturiser as normal. Rinse and dry the alum block itself after use to extend its life.

Does an alum block stop bleeding from shaving cuts?
Yes — alum is a natural haemostatic agent that constricts the small blood vessels responsible for weepers and nicks. Pressing the wet alum block directly against a minor cut for 10–15 seconds will stop the bleeding in most cases. It is more elegant and far less absurd-looking than using tissue paper, and also disinfects the cut at the same time.

Is an alum block safe for sensitive skin?
Potassium alum is generally well-tolerated by sensitive skin and is far milder than alcohol-based aftershave on reactive skin. The stinging sensation, while noticeable, is brief and does not cause lasting irritation. However, men with very dry or damaged skin may find even the mild astringent action slightly drying with daily use — rinsing the alum off promptly and following with a moisturising aftershave balm minimises this effect.

How long does an alum block last?
A standard 75–100g alum block will last most men 6–12 months of daily shaving with proper care. The key to longevity is drying the block thoroughly after each use — storing it in a dish that allows airflow rather than sitting in water. Alum dissolves slowly when wet; drying it between uses prevents unnecessary loss of the mineral.
