Pre-Shave Products — Prepare Your Skin, Protect Your Shave

The pre-shave step is the most overlooked part of a shaving routine — and for men who experience persistent irritation, razor burn, or ingrown hairs, it is often the missing piece. A pre-shave product applied before your shaving cream or soap adds an additional layer of lubrication and protection between blade and skin, softens the beard hair to reduce cutting resistance, and conditions the skin surface to reduce friction throughout the shave. For men with coarse beards, sensitive skin, or anyone who shaves without showering first, a pre-shave product is a meaningful upgrade.

Pre-shave oils work by coating the beard hair and skin with a fine lubricating layer that the blade glides over rather than dragging against. Pre-shave creams add a preparatory moisturising and softening step before your lather goes on. Shave tonics are lighter, toner-like preparations that prime the skin and open the pores before shaving. Our range covers all three formats. Free delivery across Australia on orders over $50.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a pre-shave product if I already use a good shaving cream?
For most men with normal skin and a moderate beard, a quality shaving cream or soap alone is sufficient. A pre-shave product becomes most valuable in specific situations: if you shave without showering first (and therefore haven't benefited from steam softening the beard), if you have a coarse or thick beard, if you experience persistent razor burn or irritation despite good cream, or if you shave daily and want to minimise cumulative skin stress. Think of it as insurance rather than a daily essential for everyone.

How do you apply pre-shave oil?
Apply a few drops of pre-shave oil to damp skin after washing or showering, massaging it into the beard area and allowing it to absorb for 30–60 seconds. Then apply your shaving cream or soap lather on top as normal. The oil layer beneath the lather adds lubrication without interfering with the lather's ability to soften and lift the beard. Do not rinse the oil off before applying your cream.

What is a shave tonic and how is it different from pre-shave oil?
A shave tonic is a lighter, water-based or alcohol-based preparation — similar in consistency to a face toner — that primes the skin before shaving by opening pores, calming the skin surface, and providing a light antiseptic effect. It does not provide the same level of blade lubrication as an oil. Tonics are better suited to men with oily skin who find pre-shave oils too heavy, or as a post-cleanse priming step before an oil is applied.

Can I use pre-shave oil with a cartridge razor as well as a safety razor?
Yes — pre-shave oil works equally well with both razor types. Some men find that oil can clog multi-blade cartridge heads slightly faster and more frequent rinsing of the cartridge is needed during the shave. If this is a concern, a pre-shave cream is a good alternative — it provides softening and skin preparation without the oil residue.
